Sonya: Tolstoy’s seventeen-year-old bride, a Moscow girl from an educated well-to-do family. Brunette, tall and thin, prone to emotional fits of sobbing, dramatic and moody.

Aunt Tatyana Alexandrovna (Toinette): Tolstoy’s mother-figure and manager of his household before his marriage. Tall, nervous constitution. Her hair in a bun, frail, elegant with a soft voice. However, she is loud, bossy and abrasive when alone with the servants.

Ermil: Aksinia’s husband and coachman in Moscow. Handsome, young, and hot-tempered. Drinks to excess.

Turgenev: Ivan Turgenev, famous author of Fathers and Sons, cultivated, very French, twenty years Tolstoy’s senior. A frequent visitor to the Tolstoy estate.

Andrei: House servant to the Tolstoys. A very handsome blond peasant in his late teens. Sentimental and emotionally unstable.

Old Daniel: Manager of Tolstoy’s fields, and overlooking serfs. A dirty nailed, short man in his late forties. Untrustworthy.

Dunyasha: A soldier’s wife, and friend and confidant of Aksinia. Short and plump and playful.

Valerya: An orphaned noblewoman in neighboring estate. Eighteen years old, languid, and wishing to marry Tolstoy.

Mlle. Vergani: Valerya’s guardian. A stylish French woman in her mid-thirties, voluptuous and coquettish. Flirts with all the noblemen.
