A stormy night. A dear husband’s wake. A tramp on the run. Thus begins The Shadow of the Glen, a one-act dark comedy written by Irish playwright J.M. Synge. Premiering in 1903, The Shadow of the Glen was Synge’s first play to be produced on the Dublin stage. Set in a cottage in rural Ireland in the early 1900s, it tells the story of Nora Burke, a woman struggling with her own sense of isolation and loneliness. Nora’s life takes a turn when she is visited by a mysterious tramp on the night of her husband’s wake.
