DragonFly In Danger of Losing Its Home
Posted by Gail M. Burns - February 2010
DragonFly Performing Arts, Inc., a 501(c)3 corporation, a Greene County theater company is in danger of losing it’s home if much needed financial help does not come through right away. In this struggling economy the rent on the building at 473 Main Street in Cairo, that has become known to a multiple county area as The DragonFly Performing Arts Center, has been raised substantially making it virtually impossible for the company to survive.
DragonFly has become an integral part of the Greene County community as well as drawing casts and audience from surrounding counties. They serve a critical need in today’s society where arts budgets in schools are often one of the first to get cut. They have been able to provide a valuable place to go and productive things to do for the youth of the area who truly need “something good to do” in order to stay out of trouble. Entire families have become involved in DragonFly and have ranged in age from 8 to 80. DragonFly provides the opportunity for people, who may not have normally been able to meet, to work together and build something positive for the community.
In addition to producing plays and performances of all types, DragonFly holds Karaoke nights in a safe, drug and alcohol free environment open to all ages. The Greene County Youth Bureau has recognized DragonFly as meeting a vital need in our county with a grant toward their Karaoke program. DragonFly also offers classes in virtually all aspects of performing arts taught by professionals.
Recently DragonFly had been given the opportunity to purchase the building in Cairo where they currently reside. This is a wonderful opportunity for the county to have a permanent, year-round place to go for quality entertainment and arts education. They have raised half the down payment, but desperately need approximately $45,000.00 in order to complete the purchase of 473 Main Street, Cairo. If the money can be raised, their monthly operating costs would be lowered by several hundred dollars – even before the impossible rent increase. Sadly, if unable to raise the needed money immediately, DragonFly will most likely be forced to move out and hope to find somewhere to go to continue their programming.
If you, or perhaps the company you work for, can help in any way, you would be helping to save a vitally important part of your community. Maybe you know someone that could use a tax deduction? All donations and contributions are tax deductable to the full extent of the law. Any amount can help. Every dollar goes to helping keep DragonFly alive. Please help keep the arts in Greene County.
Contributions can be made in several ways. At DragonFly’s website, www.DragonFlyPerformingArts.com just click on the DONATE button . Credit cards are also taken over the phone and in person. Checks can be mailed their office at 32 Gayhead Earlton Road, Earlton 12058. For more information, please call 731-3340.
