Gail Hears from the NY State Senate
Posted by Gail M. Burns - February 2010
NOTE: I did not send the Senate any “insightful comments” but merely filled out at postcard while attending a NYSTI performance. This is the form letter everyone who did so recieved, but I am heartened that it recognizes NYSTI artists as “good citizens” and generators of both revenue and good will for the state. For clarification, our home is in Massachusetss, but my husband works in New York State and so we pay state taxes. – Gail

Dear Ms. Burns:
Thank you for your letter expressing opposition to Governor Paterson’s proposed cuts to the New York State Theatre Institute.
I assure you we in the Senate are very concerned about these proposals and feel many of them would be counterproductive by saving a few tax dollars, but causing a loss of a lot of local talent, good citizens, and members of our community who actually bring in revenue through tourism and ticket sales.
At the moment we are reviewing all the cuts proposed by the Governor and we will work our hardest to enact a balanced, responsible budget that ensures our sustained and shared future.
Again, thank you for writing me with your insightful comments. Please feel free to contact my office anytime.
Sincerely,
Malcolm A. Smith
