Ghent Playhouse Announces Auditions for “Prisoner of Second Avenue”
Posted by Gail M. Burns - February 2010
The Ghent Playhouse will have auditions for the final play of the 2009/2010 Season ”The Prisoner of Second Avenue” by Neil Simon. Florence Hayle is directing, and auditions will be held at The Playhouse on Monday and Tuesday evenings, March 15 and 16. Those interested are asked to sign in at 7 p.m. each evening and auditions will start at 7:30 p.m.
A brief description of the roles to be cast follows:
Mel, about 47 years old. Has no job, no money and is having a breakdown. This doesn’t sound funny, but it is.
Edna, his wife . A little younger maybe 44. Loves him and tries to understand him
Harry, about 50 to 55, Mel’s brother. Jealous of Mel since childhood, but wants to help
Pearl, Mel’s sister 50 to 60
Jessie, Mel’s sister 50 to 60
Pauline, Mel’s sister 50 to 60
All of these roles are great. Mel and his wife and people like them have the resilience, the grit to survive. This play is Neil Simon at his best. There are some off stage voices.
The Ghent Playhouse is located on Town Hall Place just south of the village of Ghent, just off Route 66. It is on the same side of the road as the Ghent Firehouse, just before it.
