STORIES THAT DANCE Continues Excitement of Parent-Child Events at Proctors;

Sponsored by Fenimore Asset Management/FAM Funds Family Series at Proctors.

Value, Affordability. March 25, 7 PM

Schenectady, NY – For parents and teachers looking to introduce character education to children, Proctors Stories that Dance initiative teaches tolerance through child-performed anecdotes about topics such as bullying, diversity, peer pressure and more.

The March 25 performance of Stories that Dance at Proctors is the culmination of collaborative efforts among Proctors, the Northeast Ballet Company in residence at Proctors and students from three school classrooms. Together, they bring to life the imaginative stories of talented Capital Region youth and transform them into a spectacular, full-scale production on the Mainstage at Proctors.

Evolution of the Dance

Stories that Dance evolves from weeklong, classroom residencies at Proctors that build on the collective creativity of Proctor’s Education team in concert with professional dancers and Darlene Myers, Artistic Director of Northeast Ballet Company. In addition to a dress rehearsal with a full production team at Proctors, the works produced in classroom sessions result in live, on-stage performances on the historic stage at Proctors.

Typically, 75 – 100 young students from grades two through five get to explore life from the perspective of the director’s chair. Each class learns all the elements that turn their story into a dance: from scripting a story of their own imaging, character development, choreography, music selection, lighting design, sequencing, as well as costume design, marketing and more.

High Impact, High Reward

Proctors and Northeast Ballet Company developed the Stories that Dance program to combat the declining literacy rate in children, boost creativity, confidence and problem solving skills. The creative writing portion of the dance literacy project will directly relate to curriculum in English and ignite the wild imaginations of students. Through the process of creating a story and recreating it as a dance, students will learn about setting, character, conflict and resolution. Through the arts and the use of dance to deliver this information, students will be actively engaged, exploring rather than replicating.

Due to the high demand for the program and limited class participation, applications are accepted between April-June the previous year. Christine Sheehan, Director of Education will administer the program, and act as liaison between Northeast Ballet Company artists and schools.
