Rumpelstiltskin

Steamer No.10’s almost traditional tale of a Miller’s Daughter who gets caught up in a tale about spinning straw into gold. When the King orders her to spin the straw into gold she realizes that only magic can save her. But, when the magical, maniacal, schizophrenic Rumpelstiltskin makes his appearance she has not been saved, but doomed.

Steamer No.10 was once dubbed “The Mad Scientists of children’s theatre for our production of Rumpelstiltskin.” We use three actors to portray all twelve characters with two of them playing Rumpelstiltskin at the same time – one brain, two bodies. The show was written and directed by Steamer No.10’s artistic director Ric Chesser. It is performed by three actors who take on all 12 characters during the one hour show. Rumpelstiltskin is played by Suzie Dunn and Robert Rice, and the Miller, Miller’s Daughter (and later the Queen) is played by Heidi Nathanielsz. Suzie Dunn also plays the Chef, King, and several Pages. Robert Rice also plays the Courtier, the Prince, and several Pages. The set was designed by Michael Burns and consists of three periaktoi (pear-e-ack-toy), invented by the Greeks about 2500 years ago. These three sided units, shaped like a prism on pivots and casters, allow the actors to change from one scene to another in seconds.
