The Phantom Tollbooth
a musical
at DragonFly Performing Arts Center
Even surrounded by dozens of toys, Milo is bored. Nothing interests him at all. Sound familiar?
The Phantom Tollbooth is a children’s adventure and a modern fairy tale published in 1961, written by Norton Juster. It tells the story of a bored young boy named Milo who unexpectedly receives a magic tollbooth one afternoon and, having nothing better to do, drives through. The Demons of Ignorance are certain Milo will be their next victim, telling him, “If you get the urge to do anything – don’t. It could be dangerous.” He then finds himself in the Kingdom of Wisdom. There he accepts a quest to rescue the princesses of the kingdom, acquires two faithful companions, and has many adventures. The musical is full of puns, and many events, like Milo’s sudden jump to the Island of Conclusions, and the consequences of taking English language idioms literally.
Norton Juster’s beloved children’s book is given full musical treatment in this stage version of the modern tale of a boy who must save the princesses Rhyme and Reason and reunite the brother Kings who rule over the cities of Dictionopolis and Digitopolis. Aided by a trusty time-keeping dog, Tock, Milo successfully brings harmony to the Land of Wisdom and learns many things about words and numbers along his journey. Perhaps the most important lesson he takes with him, however, is that everything we learn has a purpose and whatever we do affects everything and everyone. When he returns home, he realizes there is never a reason to be bored in a world full of so many things to discover.
Rita Carver, DragonFly Performing Arts Artistic Director, admits that this is one of her most favorite books. “I read it at least one year, and have since I was a child.” Ms Carver continues, “I even tracked down a first edition hard cover copy on Ebay!” DragonFly has worked out a special arrangement with the novel’s publisher, Random House. A FREE copy of the novel will be given to every child 12 and under with a paid ticket to the show. There will be a limit of 2 per family.
